Saturday Staff Guide
From CSS Wiki
Starting Your Day
- Arrive at the Kane office by 8:00am. This is important because this is when the office line begins to forward to the cell phone.
- Retrieve the red cell phone from Cornwell's desk. Grab your radio from your own desk.
- Check the office voice mail for problems which may already be occurring without your knowledge. Instructions located here: https://www.css.washington.edu/wiki/Checking_Voice_Mail
- On your way out of Kane hall, briefly check the main lobby to ensure that National Testing has started and that their operator is on hand. National Testing doesn't have an event every Saturday, but they do have them frequently enough.
- Head to Mary Gates hall. You will only be able to enter via a CAAMS door, which includes the far right door on the north side of the building, the left double door on the north-west section of the building, and the right-most north-east double doors. Do not unlock any exterior doors on the weekend.
- On your way into Mary Gates hall, do a quick tour of the second floor. If you notice any groups of people standing around outside a classroom looking forlorn and neglected, inquire as to whether or not they are locked out of their class. The most likely answer is "yes." Offer to unlock their room for them. This is done by swiping your card through the omnilock, entering your 3-digit P.I.N., pressing "2" and then holding the "CL" button until lights start flashing. To manually lock an omnilock door, do the same thing but with "6" instead of the "2." When doing this, it is important to perform the input slowly, as it's easy to press buttons faster than the lock can read.
- Make your way to the MGH office. Open the office by setting your coffee atop the yellow call box so that you can use both hands. Do not unlock the office door. If something requires you to leave the office, it'll probably be in a hurry. Just prop the door open with the provided rubber wedge so that you can just kick said wedge out of the way on your way out. Omnilock doors do not freak out when propped open, only CAAMS do that.
- Do a walk through of the second floor every hour or so, keeping an eye out for anything suspicious or out of the ordinary, such as gathering crowds and the like.
- If you have any work around campus to carry out, any time after the second batch of classes get started should be fine. Just be sure to take a radio and the cell phone with you.
Other Helpful Info
- Classes tend to start in MGH around 8:30am, with a second batch around 10am. Try to be available in the office and to answer the phone at these times. It is a good idea to do a walk through of the second floor at these times as well.
- There is usually a print out of the weekend events from Event Reservations located on the countertop in the MGH Office. It will list the events for the weekend in Kane, Johnson and Mary Gates. It will also list the weekend classes in MGH as well.
- When you get a chance, check the ResDB to see what events are happening around campus. If you notice anything which looks particularly problem-prone, it might be a good idea to check in on that event around 10-15 minutes after the operator start time.
- Monitor the RT for incoming tickets. First thing in the morning you will probably notice around 20 pieces of spam sitting in the main queue. Redirect them to the Spam queue.
- Problems happen frequently around 1pm. No one has figured out why. Be available at this time.
- On any given Saturday, 90% of your problems are likely to happen between 8am and 8:30am. If, for some reason, you have to cut hours out of your shift, try to cut them from the end and not the beginning.
- If anything weird happens involving classes in MGH, or the building itself, send an email to Eric Poon notifying him of the issue. Or write him a ticket. If its a situation that requires immediate resolution regarding MGH he can be reached by phone. But only if it is a dire situation.
- UW Catalyst still run lab session during the weekends in MGH 030, 044, and 058. On the wall in MGH there will be posted a list of weekend events for those rooms. It will show day, time and room number. There are omnilocks placed on the lab doors now so we have access to open them. They should be already programmed to open for their session times but if they are not then your card will unlock the door.
Campus Keys
- The key box by the back door of 035D has keys to almost every building on campus. The list inside the plastic sleeve tells you what keys are used in which building.
- Buildings which you will most likely not be able to get into on the weekend include the following: WGH, EEB, any building without generally assignable classrooms.
- UWPD policy is to refer callers who are locked out of campus buildings to us. Occasionally, they will refer to us someone who is locked out of an event in a building without any generally assignable classrooms in it. There is, unfortunately, nothing we can do in these situations.
- There is a keybox behind Eric's desk in the MGH office which contains keys to various MGH rooms, the Johnson classrooms, as well as Bagley hall.
