Faith and Fear

- (Christians, The series, Part 4) Medieval life was characterized by contrast; great faith and riches in architecture and art existed beside abject poverty, ignorance and fear. Peasants were no better off than slaves but it was the life after death that mattered. A constant obsession with death and suffering was reflected in representations of the crucifixion and grotesque images of demons and the damned which adorned the cathedrals. St. Francis of Assisi rejected the opulence of the Church as he sought to express reverence and gratitude for the world God had created. He taught the virtues of simplicity and poverty and established a new order, the Franciscans, based on these beliefs. The Black Death made superstitious fear a reality.
