- Throughout the centuries, three types of pictures have been used for writing: the pictogram, the ideogram and the phonogram. From these first crude recorded expressions to the modern alphabet, the history of the Semitic alphabet is presented. With each letter representing a sound, it was improved by the Greeks who added vowels and later refined by the Romans who added more characters and devised a system of precise capital letters.
