Quest for the Bay, Episodes One and Two*
- 2002 ----- color ----- 94 min ----- vhs
- (Quest for the Bay series, Part 1) Quest for the Bay asks (and answers) the question: what would happen if you took 8 people from the 21st century, put them on a period boat (a York boat), and had them travel from Winnipeg, Manitoba to the Hudson Bay (The York Factory of Hudson Bay) in the manner of the old fur traders of the 1840s? The rules were that they had to stay "period-appropriate," which meant rowing the boats themselves (the oars weighed roughly 50 lbs each), living in close quarters with seven other people for an indefinite period of time, and eating only what they brought with them (mostly pemmican).
There are two episodes on this tape:
- Episode One--The Company of Adventurers (47 min)
We meet the eight-person crew (7 men and 1 woman), and get a taste of the auditioning process -- over five-hundred people tried out for the opportunity to be on this show. Training in rowing a York boat along with the first weeks of the trip are shown.- Episode Two--The Lake (47 min)
The crew settles into a routine but obstacles remain, such as sleep deprivation, the lack of bug repellant, and the monotony of eating the same thing every day. (Donated to the EMC by W. A. Douglas Jackson). (Restricted to use on University of Washington campuses only)- Topics: (Canadian Studies, History: Canadian, Television: Reality Series)
