Rx for Survival: A Global Health Challenge examines critical, worldwide threats from old diseases and bizarre new ailments resistant to modern medicine. The six-episode series profiles such diseases as Ebola fever, SARS, the West Nile virus, HIV/AIDS, and the avian flu. Included on this disk are- Disease Warriors (54 min) A look at the search for vaccines (including ones for polio, small pox, and rabies) as well as the difficulties that can occur when trying to vaccinate large and/or remote areas.
- Rise of the Superbugs (54 min) an episode that focuses on bacteria and illnesses resistant to the usual drug treatments. Includes a segment on patients with drug-resistant illnesses, and the toll that both the illness and the treatment have taken on their lives. There are also interviews with medical personnel involved in the treatment of patients with drug-resistant illnesses and a segment on how the high cost of treating these illnesses might cause some areas to gamble on not treating them.
