- (Heritage: Civilization and the Jews [DVD] series, Part 2) Disk Two includes parts four through six of the series:
- Episode Four--Crucible of Europe, The: Covers the period from the disintegration of the Carolingian Empire in the 10th century to the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492--a period in which Jewish, Christian and Moslem cultures were in constant interaction. For Jews life in the Christian world was attractive but often difficult, for the bitterness of religious differences between Christians and Jews had become institutionalized. The disastrous course of events trapped the Jewish people into politically and economically untenable positions and forced them to retreat towards the lands of Eastern Europe. Yet in this period of trial there emerged vigorous new forms of Jewish tradition and culture.
- Episode Five--Search for Deliverance, The: In Western Europe, the intellectual awakening of the Renaissance began to alter the attitudes and habits of all people. A new world of religious tolerance and economic opportunity emerged in 17th-century Holland and in England that held promise for Jews and other religious minorities. In Eastern Europe Jews, working closely with the Polish nobles, were helping to develop the agriculture and industry of new territories. These days of greatest hope for Eastern Europe's Jews were brought to a violent end by a wave of invasions and rebellions that left the land desolated. Still, in the west the ideals of Enlightenment were beginning to offer new hope for a future of tolerance.
- Episode Six--Roads From the Ghetto: Carries the story of Europe and the Jews forward to 1917. This period witnessed the rise of nationalism, romanticism, industrialism and socialism across the European continent. Covers the struggles for the emancipation of the Jews and other subject peoples and the granting of formal citizenship to the many peoples of Europe. Deals with the Russian Jewish experience, the Dreyfuss case, the birth of Zionism and other modern expressions of Judaism as well as the waves of emigration from Europe toward the end of the century.
