Recounts the history of the Israelite people in the Biblical period, their transformation from a loose confederation of tribes into a united nation. Examines the birth of monotheism and its growth into the dynamic national religion and concludes with the exile of the people to Babylonia.
- Episode Two--Power of the Word, The: Chronicles the emergence of a Jewish identity based on ideas, not territory; the intellectual interaction between the Jewish world and classical Greece and Rome. Witnesses the spread of Jewish ideas to the Hellenistic world of the Eastern Mediterranean and discusses the complex political tensions that led to the destruction of Judea by Rome in the first century of the common era.
