  • (Written and directed by Benjamin Christensen; narration by William S. Burroughs) One of the strangest and most bizarre films ever made. It is a supposed documentary on devil worship and superstitions through the ages. After a rather dry beginning illustrated with woodblock prints and etchings, we are then witness dramatic re-creations of "real" incidents of witches, satanic worship and rituals and various acts of sacrilege and perversion that must have been extremely shocking at the time the movie originally appeared. It is a difficult film to describe; you have to experience it for yourself. (The narration and a rather obnoxious jazz score was added in 1967 in this version.)
