• (Written and directed by Victor Sjostrom based on the novel by Selma Lagerlof; with Victor Sjostrom, Hilda Borgstrom, Tore Svennberg, Astrid Holm, Concordia Selander, Lisa Lundholm, Tor Weijden) Long unavailable, this masterpiece of the silent film is said to peer deeply into the Swedish soul. Certainly some of its images influenced Ingmar Bergman in his Wild Strawberries. The acting is surprisingly modest and understated for the time which adds to the horror of the tale. The first evil person who dies upon the stroke of midnight on New Years must spend his time driving Death's hearse picking up the souls of the departed until the next New Years. Added to this is the theme of redemption through the prayers of a caring woman. (Musical soundtrack)
