(Directed by Leo McCarey, story, music and lyrics by Bert Kalmar, Harry Ruby, Arthur Sheekman, Nat Perrin; with Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, Chico Marx, Zeppo Marx, Margaret Dumont, Raquel Torres, Louis Calhern) The Marx Brothers' funniest and most insane film is also a pointed political satire. When Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho) takes over the realm of Freedonia, sponsored by the rich, and ever lovely Margaret Dumont, the Ambassador of neighboring Sylvania (Louis Calhern) hires two spies (Chico and Harpo) to shadow Firefly. Zeppo just happens to be Groucho's secretary. To rescue Freedonia from financial ruin, Firefly declares war on Sylvania. Or is it to keep the Ambassador away from the ever-lovely Margaret Dumont and her millions? Or is it because that way we get musical numbers? Or jokes? Okay, who cares really? The result of this divine inspiration is one of the most insanely funny films ever made (Closed-Captioned).
