- Delhi, one of the world's great cities, commands the long road of Indian history. The city's history is presented from New Delhi with its' memories of the British raj, its' official garden parties and rows of civil servants' quarters, to 17th century Delhi, to the moghuls and their brilliant attainments in art and architecture, to a splendid age darkened by evil family quarrels and wars of succession and to the Delhi of the English romantic imagination, the old city the British loved and wrote about and for which they fought desperately when the people rose against them in 1857.
