  • 1971 ----- color ----- 95 min ----- laserdisc
  • (Directed by Vittorio De Sica, screenplay by Cesare Zavattini, Vittorio Bonicelli, Ugo Pirro based on the novel by Giorgio Bassani; with Lino Capolicchio, dominique Sanda, Fabio Testi, Romolo Valli, Helmut Berger) Amid the ravages of WWII, the Finzi-continis, a cultured Jewish family of immense wealth, languish in aristocratic splendor and privilege on their Eden-like estate in Ferrara, Italy, semmingly cocooned from the creeping tade of Fascist anti-Semitism engulfing the country. As the political atmosphere in Ferrara becomes increasingly paranoid and hostile to its Jewish citizens, the handsome and carefree Finzi-Contini children turn their well-appointed home into a refuge for their young friends. In an atmosphere of emotional instability, they play out a series of heartbreaking romantic rituals which spiral into tragedy as Fascism gradually descends upon their world. (Letterboxed) (Funded by the Department of Comparative Literature) (In Italian with English subtitles) (Restricted to use on University of Washington campuses only)
