Dancing Fire: Bronze Casting in South India
- 1994 ----- color ----- 16 min ----- vhs
- Illustrates how the creation of Hindu temple sculpture in South India operates as a culturally-specific, "ritual" mode of production. Follow highlights of the technical/ceremonial procedures used in making a bronze icon of Shiva Nataraja, lord of the dance, by a master sculptor, Kovintacami Stapati, who is a member of the Visvakarma caste of hereditary artificers in Tamil Nadu. Exposes the viewer to aspects of the larger historical and festival contexts for which such bronze images have been made. Shows use of the "lost-wax" technique of bronze casting.
