42nd Street*

  • 1933 ----- b & w ----- 89 min ----- laserdisc
  • (Directed by Lloyd Bacon, screenplay by James Seymour, Rian James based on the novel by Bradford Ropes, music and lyrics by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, choreography by Busby Berkeley; with Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, Warner Baxter, Bebe Daniels, George Brent, Una Merkel, Guy Kibbee, Ginger Rogers) During the Depression, America needed escapism in the movie theatres. This film was the first of the great Busby Berkeley musicals. It is the ultimate backstage musical where the star is injured and a chorus girl, fresh from the sticks, saves the show. The story may be filled with chlches, but Berkeley's production numbers remain breathtaking. They include: "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me," "Young and Healthy," "Shuffle Off to Buffalo," and "42nd Street." (Includes 1933 cartoon Shuffle Off to Buffalo and the Original Theatrical Trailer for Gold Diggers of 1933) (Funded by the Department of Comparative Literature) (Restricted to use on University of Washington campuses only)
