Enterprising businesswoman Joan Crawford not only controls the nearby profitable gambling, she's been buying up enough property to make her the most powerful person in town. Arch-rival Mercedes McCambridge sets out to stop her and force Crawford out of town. the timely arrival of Sterling Hayden as the ex-gunslinging troubadour, Johnny Guitar, temporarily thwarts McCambridge's dark plans, but not even he can prevent a violent showdown between two power-hungry women. One of the most unusual Westerns ever filmed in which the "good guys" wear black, gender roles are reversed and a sexual tension underscores many of the scenes.
