Vijayanagara: Where Kings and Gods Meet*

This is a city of myth—the Monkey Kingdom. Legend says that Hamuman, the Monkey God, was born here. Ruined temples, palaces and tumbled walls evoke memories of a glorious imperial past. Vijayanagara—its name means City of Victory—is today a city of ghosts. All that is left is 25 acres of stone ruins and four centuries of memories. John Fritz, archaeologist and anthropologist, one of the leaders of an international team documenting and study Vijayanagara, gives some insight into this splendid site.
