  • Set in the mill communities of the Pacific Northwest, Cuts follows the life and work of the shingle sawyer. He works with two six-foot whirling circular saws, one to his left, the other in front of him. He places his hands within a fraction of an inch of these blades every time he trims a cedar shingle. He is paid by the quantity of his production thus the faster he goes the better his wage. The price paid for any break in concentration is dear. A sawyer will lose first one finger, then another, but he rarely quits. It is not merely a question of money, it is a question of a man's need to produce, his technology and the earth from which he takes his resources.
