Double Indemnity*

  • 1944 ----- b & w ----- 107 min ----- laserdisc
  • (Directed by Billy Wilder, screenplay by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler from the novel by James M. Cain; with Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward G. Robinson) Unsuspecting Mr. Dietrichson becomes increasingly accident prone after his icily calculating wife (Stanwyck) encourages him to sign a double-indemnity policy proposed by smooth talking insurance agent (MacMurray). Against a backdrop of distinctly Californian settings, the partners in crime plan the perfect murder to collect on the insurance. Perfect until a claims manager (Robinson) gets a familiar feeling of fowl play and pursues the matter relentlessly. The classic example of Film Noir.
