One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich*

  • 1988 ----- color ----- 105 min ----- vhs
  • (Directed by Alfred Burke, from the novel by Alexander Solzhenitsyn; with Tom Cortenay, Alfred Burke, James Maxwell, Eric Thompson) Ivan Denisovich is a prisoner in a Stalinist work camp. Trapped in an oppressive system designed to break men of their spirit, they continue their determined fight to retain sanity and self worth. Every day this test of perseverance is torturously endured. Each day is a struggle between each prisoner and the state. Whether outwitting the guards in the filthy mess hall, aiding a comrade in the densely populated bunks or meeting the construction quota at the snow covered worksite, each condition represents another agonizing battle to be fought.
