Crisis Bargaining

• Labor negotiations have a special kind of drama, especially in times of financial crisis. What does it feel like to live through 98 days of bargaining? What are the problems faced by elected officials and union leaders? How do they present these problems to the public? Explores these issues through the use of televised interviews and news programs recorded at the time of the New York City labor negotiations in 1978. Although the details of the New York negotiations are different and the numbers involved are bigger than those faced by other American cities, the basic thrust remains the same--bargaining in a time of financial crisis.
