  • (Directed by Milos Forman; with Jan Vostrcil, Josef Kolb and Josef Sebanek) When the firemen of a small Czech village arrange a ball in honor of their aging chief, the old man is quickly forgotten as the tribute becomes a sprawling disaster in which decorations catch fire, raffle prizes are stolen and the firemen judge a hilariously demoralizing beauty contest. The film was heralded as a satire of Slavic bureaucracy. Yet in his introduction to the film, Forman admonishes the audience: "Don't look for hidden symbols. Just have fun."
