  • (Directed by George Bloomfield; with Raymond Cloutier, Roger Blay, Christopher Plummer, William Shatner, Arthur Hill, Leslie Nielsen, Lloyd Bouchner, John Neville) Louis Riel, mystic visionary and leader of the Metis (half-French, half-Indian hunters of the Prairies) challenges Canada's redcoats in this epic tale of a people's fight for equality and freedom of rule. Sir John MacDonald, Canada's irascible Prime Minister, is determined to link his nation's borders by rail. The price is the livelihood and liberty of the Metis. The Montreal-educated Riel assumes their leadership and despite repeated attempts at peaceful solution, is forced to lead his people in two bloody and futile rebellions, fueled by religious and racial conflict.
