Cows of Dolo Ken Paye: Resolving Conflict among the Kpelle

- Documents the coexistence of traditional life patterns and Western adaptations in the modernizing Liberian village of Fokwele. When a cow foraging in a rice field is wounded by a Kpelle farmer, a conflict ensues that gradually comes to resolution through a hot-knife trial by ordeal. This incident evidences that the outburst is rooted in the complex relationships between the cattle-owning chiefs and the ordinary farmers.
