Courtship Behavior of the Queen Butterfly
- 1962 ----- color ----- 17 min ----- 16mm
- Courtship of Danus gilippus berenice consists of a stimulus-response reaction chain and involves visual, chemical and tactile stimuli. Male pursues female, overtakes her in the air and induces her to alight. Copulation is followed by a postcopulatory flight in which he carries her to an inconspicuous area where insemination takes place. Courtship can end during any phase of the behavioral interaction. If the female is unreceptive after he has induced her to alight, he often flutters above and alights on her dorsum. Quantitative methods of rearing individuals in the laboratory are shown.
