  • (Constructing Reality: Exploring Media Issues in Documentary series) Children of War (26 min), six teenagers from conflict-torn lands speak to their Canadian peers about the costs of living under military and political repression; their testimony puts a human face on stories we hear and see in the media; Black Mother, Black Daughter (30 min), women's contributions to Black culture in Nova Scotia draws heavily on techniques of oral history and the interview to document previously unrecorded chapters of social history. Honors the vitality and exuberance of "real life", and pays homage--through the poetry of film--to that which surrounds us. They exemplify the dictum that documentary is first and foremost film. Flamenco at 5:15 (30 min), a celebration of creative expression, energy, and life about dance class at the National Ballet School in Toronto; Sandspit to Dildo (28 min), an exhilarating, exuberant blend of documentary and music video which offers glimpses of Canada and Canadians far removed from the "official" versions.
