Musical Magic: Gilbert & Sullivan in Stratford*

  • 1993 ----- color ----- 57 min ----- vhs
  • Follows celebrated Canadian stage director/choreographer Brian Macdonald rehearsing Canada's premier operetta company in three Gilbert and Sullivan comic operettas: The Mikado, The Gondoliers, and Iolanthe. Company members, who are trained actors and/or singers, must not only learn to dance, but also have to step lively to keep pace with Macdonald's relentless search for perfection. He will revise and improvise until opening night. Macdonald's refreshingly unorthodox approach to these much beloved operettas, along with designer Susan Benson's imaginative sets and spectacular costumes, will delight and entertain Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiasts as well as those new to their musical magic. Includes highlights from performances of all three productions. (Donated by the Department of Canadian Studies) (Restricted to use by institutions of learning within the State of Washington only)
