- (National Dream, The: Building the Impossible Railway series, Part 3) Chronicles the progress made under Alistair MacKenzie's Liberal government. Despite doubts from his cabinet and Edward Blake, MacKenzie reluctantly pursues the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway under the guise of it being a Public Work. He thinks to build the railway in sections. However, he does not anticipate the problems in British Columbia--the mountain passes and the continual costs of surveying. Pressure mounts to finish from British Columbia as well as the British Governor General Dufferin. The economic depression adds to rising level of MacKenzie's irritation.
