- (National Dream, The: Building the Impossible Railway series, Part 4) After only laying 200 miles of railway in five years, the Liberals are now under attack by the Conservatives; independent Donald Smith (who will later become a major player and funder of the railway) is also accused of lying about his position regarding the CPR. In the election of 1878, the Conservatives take the House of Commons by storm under the re-elected Macdonald. His plan is to build a Canada for Canadians, his National Policy is to build the rail under private Canadian ownership. There is discussion about the cost in dollars and lives, as well as various alternative routes.
