- (Valour and the Horror, The series, Part 2) From the outset of World War II, it had been clear to Britain that air superiority would be a decisive factor in the battle against Hitler's Germany. At airbases all over England and in the skies over Europe, more than 50,000 Canadian airmen served in the campaign to bomb Germany. The odds against them were catastrophic--only one in three aircrews survived. Bomber Command deliberately hid the truth from its squadrons, for reasons of morale. Also hidden was the plan to crush Germany by concentrating the bombing on civilian instead of industrial targets. Ordered to drop their payloads on a remote and faceless enemy below, the airmen of Bomber Command has a thankless job. For those airmen who survived, the sheer terror and sense of helplessness left an indelible scar.
