- Issues of cultural and religious sovereignty are raised when the Karuk Indians of northern California and the U.S. Forest Service go to court over the protection of ceremonial lands. Relying on the Freedom of Religion provision of the U.S. Constitution, the Indians win a landmark victory, only to see it later reversed by the Supreme Court. However, an environmental victory is still realized, and in the process, the Indians discover their ability to control their lives and shape their destiny.
