  • (Directed by Luis Bunuel, based on the novel by Benito Perez Galdos; with Francisco Rabal, Rita Macedo, Marga Lopez, Jesus Fernandes) Bunuel presents a picaresque pilgrim's progress as an eccentric young priest, Father Nazario, whose virtues are surprisingly earthy and his purity is actually a subtle (and probably unconscious) form of roguery. Nazario sets out to live a life of Christian purity beyond the confines of the church, but meets time and again with hostility, indifference and confusion. After encounters with a dwarf, some rather violent workers, two plague-ridden lovers, and a variety of women, Nazario's story reaches an ambiguous ending: he journeys onward, a look of despair on his face, a gift pineapple in his hand. Once more, Bunuel disrupts the film's realistic surface with startling glimpses of the surreal, the most memorable here being a truly haunting image of Christ.
