- (Living Islam series, Part 2) Nostalgia for lost glory still affects many Muslims today. The expulsion of the Moors from the Kingdom of Granada in 1492 is still viewed as a gaping wound in the world of Islam. The religious celebrations and re-enactments of that defeat are particularly hurtful to Muslims. The other major empires' greatness and subsequent decline explain many differences in Muslim thinking today. The Ottomans were confronted by Europe and Christianity, accounting for the "western" approach of many Turkish Muslims. The Mughals achieved a synthesis with Hinduism that produced such beauty as the Taj Mahal. The Saffavid dynasty was characterized by the shi'a/sunni split which is still acted out in Southern Iran in the Taziya pageants. (Donated by the Department of Anthropology)
