In his book, Contradictions, An Account of Art in China during the 20th Century, he points out that much of the art was not self-motivated. It was geared to socialism and lacked individuality. Change and transformation has characterized Chinese art in the last decades. It now reflects life and is the primary message sender to the Chinese people.
