- (Upon Reflection series) Host Marcia Alvar speaks with Tsianina Lomawaima, Professor of American Indian Studies, University of Washington. She discusses her study of Indian children who were sent to American schools and her own father's experience in a boarding school. She points out the trauma Indian children experienced in leaving home and how the cutting off of any correspondence with their native cultures caused trouble in teen and later years. She stresses the need for balance when teaching students with cross-cultural backgrounds. She also discusses her method of teaching which involves leaving the door open for new information and challenges.
