  • (Blood and Brotherhood series, Part 5) The struggles in Quebec are another chapter in the story of European nationalism: The descendants of French settlers three centuries ago seeking to maintain their national heritage and an aboriginal group taking up the language of European nationalism to advance its claims. The politics of language is at the heart of the battle for a unilingual French-speaking society, at the same time, a different yet similar battle is going on in the icy north, where the Cree people are fighting the Quebec government over territory the Cree claim. Quebec raises the question of whether a single federal state can survive if it contains a couple of nations and two jamor language groups.
