• (Upon Reflection series) Host Marcia Alvar speaks with Shawn Wong, author and Professor of American Ethnic Studies, University of Washington. Professor Wong believes that the resistance to a multi-cultural requirement in higher education results from a fear of the perceived loss of Western civilization as the core of American education. However, making people culturally literate enables them to have a strong cultural sense of self. He admits that there has been a change in attitudes since the publication of his first book, Home Base, in 1979. Interest in Asian American writing goes beyond the ethnic community for how else could The Joy Luck Club be so popular.
