- (Christians, The series, Part 8) By the sixteenth century man's conception of the world had changed drastically. The sailors of Spain and Portugal would not only import food and spices, they would also export Christianity. Cortes arrived in Mexico in 1519 to find in the Aztecs a culture more ancient than Christianity. Montezuma, expecting the return of the peaceful god of wind and agriculture, Quetzalcoatl, invited Cortes and his soldiers into the city. Cortes took Montezuma prisoner and within two years controlled the empire. The spiritual conquest was almost as fast. Though the Spanish crusade was brutal it ended in success when the whole of Latin America became Christian.
