Re-Inventing Japan

- The Japanese have lead the world in consumer electronics for several decades. These products were designed using scientific breakthroughs discovered by western research laboratories. As a consequence, Japan has had no long-term theoretical basic science laboratories. To keep their lead in the electronics industry, Japan is now facing physical and cultural barriers in establishing basic science institutes. Experts say the switch from applied science to basic science will not only take an immense capital investment but also a basic change in Japanese culture and the educational system.
