- Traces over forty years of turbulent race relations through the lens of prime time entertainment television. Part I: Color Blind TV? (1948-68) (48 min) In prime time, a segregated black society could only parody, never equal, white America (Amos 'n Andy). Shows like Beulah, The Nat King Cole Show, Julia and I Spy would only show non-threatening images of black Americans white American were willing to embrace. Part II: Coloring the Dream (1968-88) (39 min) All in the Family, Good Times, Frank's Place, and The Cosby Show changed the image of blacks on television, and not always for the better. With Roots, prime time finally found a way to acknowledge black oppression without fundamentally challenging the American Dream.
