- 1991 ----- color ----- 26 min ----- vhs
- Gestures are a form of nonverbal communication, a silent language unique to every society. Although never taught in school or studied in books, the language of gestures is learned fluently by each of us. Explores gestures from cultures around the world by using videotaped segments from "English as a Second Language" classes, where people new to the United States learn English vocabulary and grammar. There are enormous cultural differences in gestures, just as there are enormous differences in vocabulary. These differences have important implications for cross-cultural understanding. Familiar gestures from home may not necessarily mean the same thing in another culture.
