Monera: Bacteria and Cyanobacteria, Part 1: Classification, Structure and Reproduction
- 1989 ----- color ----- 19 min ----- 16mm/vhs
- Introduces members of the Kingdom Monera comparing the subcellular organization of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The sizes and shapes of bacilli, cocci, vibrios and spirilli are compared. Their flagellar-driven motility is shown. The biochemical structures of the bacterial wall distinguish them taxonomically and account for their susceptibility or resistance to certain antibiotics. Asexual reproduction and conjugation are considered in the context of the remarkably rapid growth of bacteria under favorable environmental conditions. The evolution and reproduction of cyanobacteria which give off oxygen as a waste product is closely linked to the gradual emergence of a life-supporting environment.
