City, The
- 1939 ----- b & w ----- 43 min ----- 16mm
- (Produced by Ralph Steiner and Willard Van Dyke for the 1939 New York World's Fair; music by Aaron Copland) Traces the historic stages in the growth of cities in the U.S., ending in a prescription for the future by the group of city planners who sponsored the film: that urban development could be decentralized to eliminate congestion and relieve health and safety hazards. But the heart of the film lies in its lively (and somewhat antithetical) celebration of contemporary Manhattan life. Candid scenes of bustling city dwellers, traffic snarls, and a climactic montage sequence at a frenetic lunch counter introduced satiric humor to the American documentary.
