- (Trials of Life: A Natural History of Behavior series, Part 9) Animals employ an amazing plethora of natural compasses only guessed at by biologists today. Each year Arctic terns leave their nests 600 miles from the North Pole and migrate 12,000 miles, longest of all animal journeys. Then they return to nest within inches of their old homes. In the middle of the Sahara's great Sand Sea, a tiny ant uses the sun as a compass to find its way in a featureless environment. In the black darkness of a massive cave in Borneo, swiftlets use echolocation to find their way in the dark.
