- (Odyssey series) Examines early archaeological attempts to explain the how and why of the large earthworks that were constructed in the great river valleys of the Midwest and southeast. In 1897, under the direction of Cyrus Thomas, the U.S. Government appropriated $5,000 to uncover the relationship between the mounds and Indian descendants. Looks at modern archaeological findings, first suggested by Thomas, which support the theory of two major mound building cultures.
