Tibet--Where Continents Collide, Part 1: South Tibet and the Yarlung Tsangpo Suture
- 1989 ----- color ----- 47 min ----- vhs
- Focuses on the nature, as seen in the field, of a young, well exposed, major intercontinental collision zone. Structured much like a geological field trip, it presents a detailed synthesis of the geology of the collision between India and Eurasia. The story of this collision is complex, involving the accretion, to Eurasia, of an ophiolite and a seamount terrane, during the 45 million years that preceded the hard collision with India. The collision resulted in the uplift of the Tibet Plateau and the Himalaya, through different processes. The story of the collision is told in detail using field footage, with diagrams and graphic animation to clarify the interpretation of what is seen in the field.
