- Founded in 1967 by actor/playwright Douglas Turner Ward, actor Robert Hooks, and theater manager Gerald Krone, The Negro Ensemble Company holds as its stated goal of creating "a Theater of Excellence concentrating primarily on themes of Black life." Celebrates the company's first 20 years, "rich in struggle and accomplishment." Places the plight of the Black actor in context while examining the history of the time as it relates to the plays produced.
