- (Nova series) In 1967, the World Health Organization began its attempt to eliminate smallpox around the world. NOVA traces that massive effort by hundreds of doctors and health workers in West Africa, Nigeria, Yugoslavia, India and Bangladesh. The approach taken by health workers to combat the disease was mass vaccination. But even after 90 percent of a population had been vaccinated, the disease still persisted. Finally a method was found: surveilance-containment. The idea was to find cases of smallpox and vaccinate anyone who had come into contact with the victim. Using this approach, smallpox has been virtually wiped out.
