- (Upon Reflection series) Host Marcia Alvar speaks with Alex Haley, author of Roots. He explains how the author changes to a spectator after a manuscript is sent to the publisher. They discuss the universality of the Roots story and the rise in the public's interest in genealogy after Roots was broadcast on television in 1977. They also discuss how the timing of a release affects its success, the downfalls of fast fame, and the writers he admires. Mr. Haley concludes with a comparison of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.
