(Directed by Humberto Solas) A cinematic masterpiece that is a grandiose mix of audacity, romanticism, experimentalism and epic historical vision. Structured in three parts, each centering on a woman in a different era of modern Cuban history: an aristocratic spinster involved in a passionate romance during the Spanish occupation in 1895; a bourgeois girl leaving her family to take up with an anti-Machado terrorist during the uprisings of 1933; and a strong-willed young peasant woman locked up by her foolish husband in the post-revolutionary Cuba of the 1960's.
