Children of the Fields

- In Yakima, at Toppenish High School, there is a growing concern about children of migrant families who miss school to work in the fields. Often-times, the children sacrifice their education for the financial needs of their families. The current system seems to encourage the students to drop out because they cannot keep up with their school work. However, many new programs are now underway in Yakima. At Toppenish, the groundwork is being laid to increase the current graduation rate and to set an example for other schools in the region. (Donated by Washington Centennial '89)
